Oral Hygiene & Preventive Care

A thorough at-home hygiene routine and regular checkups and cleanings at the dentist’s office are the key to oral health.

The secret to good oral health is twofold

The oral hygiene you practice at home—brushing at least two times a day and flossing every day—is great for keeping your smile healthy and beautiful between visits to your dentist.

But to keep your smile at it’s healthiest, it must be combined with the more in-depth cleaning only dental professionals can perform during regular dental hygiene appointments. These cleanings should take place about twice a year, or as prescribed by Dr. Mehdian.

What happens during a typical checkup and cleaning appointment?

Exam

We will examine the condition of your teeth and existing restorations so that you are aware of any developing concerns. We will address both any immediate issues, as well as any problems that are developing. We will look for cavities, gum disease, problems with your bite (how the teeth come together), and your jaw joints, and we will consult with you about whether you are happy with the color and aesthetics of your smile.  We may also perform examinations of your head/neck, teeth, gums, tongue and surrounding tissues as part of an oral cancer screening.

Cleaning

In addition to the exam, we will also clean your teeth. This involves removing plaque and tartar between the teeth and around the gum line, a cleaning with an electric brush and a gritty toothpaste to really scrub your teeth clean and expert flossing. Our hygiene team will determine how frequently you should come in for cleanings, and also perform fluoride treatment, desensitizing, sealants treatment, professional breath control, and periodontal (gum disease) treatment, depending on your needs.
